Greetings, this is a new oil to me, but I am always curious about oils I don’t already have and I opened it and LOVE it….. It has a mild herbal scent that has clean sweet undertones. It is delightful, I have 2 drops Bergamot, 2 drops Marjoram and 2 drops Lavender, in my diffuser right how. This combo was recommended by one of my books which says historically has been used to create a very relaxing and soothing combination. I’m sure you could dilute it in a roller ball and use it topically as well as long as the area you apply it to isn’t exposed to direct sunlight. It smells so great and is very relaxing.
In ancient Egypt morjoram was used to heal disinfect and preserve. Aphordite, the goddess of love, was said to have cherished this herb. The Greeks name Marjoram translates to joy of the mountain and they used it to make wreaths and garlands for weddings and funerals. It already sounds great right.
Marjoram Origanum morjorana has a variety of health benefits including stimulating the digestives systems’ ability to move waste through the body (peristalsis), but conversely can help soothe intestinal spasms (Tisserand, p252). Because of its anti bacterial, antiseptic and anti-infectious properties, it is also often used as a substitute for Oregano Essential oil, although it has a more refined scent.
Tisserand goes on to explain that while not a disease, clergymen used marjoram to control excessive sexual impulses for many years and used it in asylums for orphans to control excessive masturbation and nymphomania especially when associated with hysteria or anxiety. I like to think we all have a history, but who knew I was going to come across that while researching lovely smelling essential oils today. I guess a practical modern application would be to diffuser this in your teenagers’ room if you feel like they is “too busy” in there.
This historical practice documented by Tisserand is substantiated by Margaret Ann Lembo (p209) where she describes the mental uses as “relaxing the body enough to release the grasp on repetitive and/or negative thoughts associated with fears, phobias , and obsessions. Sweet marjoram also helps you to speak your truth with love and beauty.”. Interesting!
Son in modern studies this pubmed article shows that a mixture of Marjoram, Lavender, Eucalyptus, Rosemary and peppermint diluted in a carrier oil comprised of Almond oil, Apricot oil and Jojoba oil, reduced pain in the arthritic group and reduced depression in both the control group and the study group. That’s great news.
Additionally this Pubmed Article shows that a blend of Essential Oils including Morjoram, Black Pepper, Lavender and Peppermint may help neck pain by improving pain tolerance of the trapezius muscles after applying a cream comprised of 3% Essential Oil Solution.
